How Gymscle works

Last updated November 2, 2026

Plain answers about how Gymscle actually works. For what happens to your data, see the Privacy Policy.

Plans

Where do the built-in plans come from?

They are established, evidence-based programs, not made up. Each plan's detail page lists clickable sources: where the program originates and the science behind it. Choosing one clones an editable copy into your plans, so you can rename it, swap exercises, and change sets and reps — you never train a locked version.

Can the app build a plan for me?

Yes. On the Training tab open the plan gallery and pick Generate for me: a handful of quick questions about how you train, one tap on Generate plan, and a complete plan opens in the editor — fully yours to rename, reorder and reshape before you save it.

How do I share a plan, or add one someone sent me?

On the Training tab, open a plan's menu and tap Share to get a short plan code you can send to anyone. To add one, copy the code (it starts with “GSP1:”), tap the import icon in the top-right corner of the Training tab and choose Paste from clipboard.

I have a plan on paper, in a PDF or as a photo. Do I have to type it in?

No. On the Training tab tap the import icon and pick From photos, Scan with camera or From PDF file. Your iPhone reads the days, exercises, sets and reps itself, on the device, marks in amber anything it was unsure about, and saves nothing until you tap Add plan. The reading is your iPhone's own text recognition, not the Apple Intelligence language model, so plan import works exactly the same on every iPhone.

How big is the exercise catalog?

1337 exercises, with names in English and Polish and searchable slang aliases in both languages. The catalog ships inside the app, so browsing and searching it needs no internet connection. Exercises you name yourself still work everywhere; linking them to a catalog entry (Settings, Workout, Link exercises) is what connects them to records and the muscle math.

Workouts and logging

Where do the weight suggestions during a workout come from?

From your own recent sessions with that exercise and the plan's goal — plain math, no AI. Tap the line and it fills the weight field; ignore it and nothing happens. If you log RIR, those tags sharpen the suggestions further.

What is RIR and how do I turn it on?

RIR (reps in reserve) is how many reps you had left in the tank when a set ended, on a 0 to 4+ scale. It is off by default; turn it on in Settings, under Workout, with Log RIR after sets. Once on, a quiet row of chips appears right after you log a set — one optional tap, always skippable — and on Apple Watch you swipe down from the logging screen to tag the set. Tagged sets make the weight suggestions sharper; untagged sets change nothing.

Can I edit a workout I already saved?

Yes, fully: sets and weights, exercises, the date and time, the duration, and which plan and day it belongs to. Open the workout in History and tap Edit. After any edit your personal records are recalculated from your full history, so they always tell the truth. Badges you have already earned are never taken away by an edit — though an edit can still unlock new ones retroactively.

I forgot to log a workout. Can I add it later?

Yes. Tap the plus in the top corner of the History screen and enter the workout with its real date. It joins your history like any other session, and records and statistics are recalculated to include it.

How is my streak counted?

It is a weekly streak: every calendar week with at least one workout keeps it alive. Rest days never break it, so a normal 3-4x/week split builds the streak instead of resetting it. You can set which day the week starts on under General.

Can the app remind me to train?

Settings, Notifications: a daily nudge at a time you choose, plus rest timer alerts that fire even when the app is in the background. Weigh-in reminders are separate and live under Body. All of these are local notifications, generated on your device.

Can I use Siri or the Shortcuts app?

Yes — five shortcuts ship with the app: start your workout, hear what is next, log a body weight, ask for an exercise record and check your streak. Siri takes the English phrases (“Start my workout in Gymscle”), and in the Shortcuts app they also slot into your own automations. Everything runs on your iPhone.

Body and progress photos

What does the Body screen track?

Weight, body fat and tape measurements, each with its own history and chart, plus your progress photos. The dashboard shows your weight trend and how consistent your weigh-ins have been, and the info button on a metric explains how much day-to-day movement is normal before you read anything into it.

How do progress photos work?

Photos live inside Gymscle, on your device — they never appear in your camera roll. Each photo pairs with your logged weight from that day, so the timeline shows your physique and the number together, and the compare view puts two dates side by side with the delta between them.

Are my progress photos backed up?

Only if you switch it on. By default photos stay on your phone and are lost with it. The switch — Back up progress photos, in Settings under Data, and also offered on the sheet at your first photo — copies them to your own private iCloud database, where only your iCloud account can read them, counted against your iCloud storage. The switch works both ways: turning it off deletes every photo from iCloud again, and deleting a photo in the app deletes its iCloud copy too. On a new phone, turning the switch on brings your photos back.

Can I import old photos from my camera roll?

Yes, several at once. Imported photos are placed on the timeline by the date they were taken, read from the photo's own information, so an import of two years of check-ins lands in the right order. You can change any photo's date afterwards.

What are pose tags?

Front, side or back, so the flipbook and comparisons match like with like — front compares with front. New photos default to front; you can retag one photo at a time, or select many in the grid and tag them in one tap. If you never tag anything, everything still works.

Apple Watch and Apple Health

How does the Apple Watch app work?

Start a workout on your iPhone or straight from the watch. Log sets from your wrist, turn the crown to adjust weight or reps, and the rest timer runs with its own haptic. Your iPhone keeps the master copy: it only needs to be within Bluetooth range (a bag or locker is fine), and if it drops out mid-workout your taps queue up and sync back the moment it reconnects.

Can I control music from the watch during a workout?

Yes. The workout screen’s third page is the system Now Playing view, so it drives whatever is on: Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal or anything else playing on your iPhone.

What does Gymscle record from my Apple Watch?

During a workout the watch records your heart rate and calories through Apple Health, and saves the session to Health when you finish, so it counts toward your rings — a discarded workout is discarded there too. The app reads those numbers back only to show them next to your workouts in history. Health data stays on your devices: it is never uploaded to iCloud and never sent anywhere.

Does Gymscle read my sleep?

Only if you allow it in the Health permission sheet. Gymscle then reads your nights from Apple Health — time asleep and, when your watch or sleep app records them, the deep, core and REM stages — to show one line on a workout’s preview and in its history detail, and a Sleep screen under Me with your last fourteen nights. It never scores your sleep, never tells you whether to train, and never writes sleep to Health. Like all Health data, it stays on your device and is never uploaded anywhere.

Does Gymscle sync my weight with Apple Health?

Only if you turn it on: Me, Body, then Sync with Apple Health. Weight and body fat from Health then show up in Gymscle, and readings you log are saved back to Health. Readings that came from Health are shown alongside your own but never copied into your iCloud data.

Your data

Does Gymscle collect anything about me?

No. There are no accounts, no analytics, no advertising, no tracking, and no Gymscle server. Your data lives on your device and, if you are signed in, in your own private iCloud, which the developer cannot access. The Privacy Policy has the full picture.

What exactly does the app store about me?

Settings, under Data, has a Your data screen: an inventory of everything the app holds — workouts, plans, progress photos and the space they take, body measurements, records and badges — so you can see it before exporting or deleting anything.

Is my training data backed up?

Your plans, history and body entries sync to your private iCloud when you are signed in; the status is shown under Data. You can also export your data yourself (Settings, Data, Export or import history) as a file or a code — history, plans, body entries, goals, badges and weigh-in reminders — and importing asks whether to merge or replace. Progress photos and check-ins are not part of that export; the iCloud backup switch is the photos' only backup.

Can I delete everything?

Settings, Data, Delete data. It offers an export first, and erasing takes your data off iCloud and your other devices too, including any backed-up progress photos. Your settings stay as they are, and so do your check-ins for now — delete those one by one in the journal on the Progress tab.

Look and feel

Can I change the app's colours and icon?

Settings, Appearance: light or dark mode, an accent colour — including a monochrome option that strips the interface back to black and white — and a matching app icon, with colour versions of the mark plus gold and silver metal finishes.

What is writing the sentences on the Summary card?

Apple's on-device model, on iPhones that support Apple Intelligence. The app counts your numbers first and always shows them; the model only turns that short list into a few sentences, marked “Written on device”. The same model writes the check-ins on the Progress tab, which are saved to a journal with their numbers. Nothing is sent anywhere, and the app works the same without it — the card simply shows the numbers. Settings, About Apple Intelligence has the whole picture.

Can I put Gymscle on my Home Screen?

There are three widgets: Week with your streak and trained days, Next workout with the day coming up in your plan, and Weight with your latest reading. Add them the usual way, by holding the Home Screen and tapping the plus.

Can I use the app in a different language than my phone?

Yes — Settings, General, Language switches between English and Polish immediately, independent of the language your iPhone is set to.
